Justin Cooke -Founder & CEO
“Your phone is your remote control to the world”
In May 2014, Tunepics took off and for the first time, we were able to combine music and images via social media. Justin Cooke, Founder and CEO of Tunepics came up with this brilliant idea and now we can’t get enough of it! We know you’re all thinking ‘how did I not think of this?’ Well, we can tell you, there is no huge scientific reason behind it; an Autumnal photograph inspired Justin to want to play Paulo Nutini’s ‘Autumn Leaves’.
Now we’re all in a position to add a soundtrack to our lives.
The team at Winning Moments were lucky enough to meet Justin a little while back and were all completely inspired by the journey he’s been on with his career. Before Tunepics, Justin worked for several major brands that we all know and love; Burberry and Topshop. Justin played a huge part in Burberry’s digital transformation. 5 years into his career and Burberry’s Sir Phillip Green head-hunted Justin to become apart of the Arcadia team. Justin then went on to secure a leading role at Topshop, and became Chief Marketing Officer with the aim to drive plans to become a truly global brand.
Tunepics started off as a hobby and soon became a huge social media phenomenon. Influential users of Tunepics include Jamie Oliver, Paul Smith and will.i.am.
Using emotion in marketing is something Justin feels very strongly about. He finds great emotion in the weather and if you really think about it, I’m sure you do as well. When the sun is shining you’re more than likely to feel happy; when it’s raining you’ll probably feel sad. With all of this in mind, Justin created an ’emotion wheel’ on Tunepics. The wheel includes a variety of colours which gives you a chance to really express true emotion when you see an image and hear the accompanying music. We’re so used to clicking ‘Like’ to express our feelings but Justin felt this wasn’t emotive enough. Humans are hard-wired to fall in love with people, expressions, emotions and faces, not necessarily branding and logos.
Don’t believe us? Well, here’s a little brain teaser for you… Without looking, what colour is the first G of the Google Logo? I bet some of you get it wrong! This is a logo that some of us see hundreds of times a day, and yet we struggle to remember a simple colour variant. This further cements the theory that we are emotive beings, and Justin has clearly maximised this emotional engagement of the colour wheel within the Tunepics app.
As we know, combining an Autumnal photograph with Paulo Nutini’s Autumn leaves triggered the inspiration to create Tunepics however we wanted to dig a little big deeper into getting to know Justin. He explained that the best piece of business advice he’s ever been given is ‘Don’t be afraid to be passionate in business’, a motto that he has clearly lived his life by so far. In terms of digital trends for 2016, Justin predicted that wearable technology will continue to develop – something that Tunepics is fully integrated with – it was the first British social media application to be supported on the Apple Watch. As the CEO of a social media platform, it might also surprise you that he feels we may be taking a step back from traditional social media practices. He laughed when a member of our team took the compulsory “lunch photo for Instagram”, and suggested that we may be wising up to publishing our entire lives for the world to see.
In terms of his favourite apps, apart from Tunepics of course, he adores CityMapper for navigating, Monument Valley (a game inspired by architecture), and Vivino – one to check out for all of you wine lovers! One of the purposes behind Tunepics was that Justin wanted you to be able to add a soundtrack to your life. With this in mind, we wanted to know what the soundtrack to Justin’s life would be and he told us that the “The Cure – Friday I’m in Love” would be his choice.
Tunepics is available to download on IOS via the iTunes store.
