Traditional Jack-O-Lanterns are being ditched this Halloween by trendy fashion-conscious trick or treaters. From pineapples to watermelons, peppers and more, their crafty carving is a trend that seems to be pushing pumpkins aside.
Carving pumpkins can be hugely time consuming and messy, not forgetting, orange is not everyone’s colour. So this Halloween, head to the fruit and vegetable aisle at your local supermarket and get creative. Some of our favourite pumpkin alternatives are:
They’re trendy and delicious, what more could you want? Simply cut off the top of the pineapple, scoop the fruit out, empty the juice and dry out with a towel. All you have to do next is carve a spooky face, pop a tea light inside, place it’s prickly hairdo back on top and voila! You have a terrifying tropical monster of your own.
- Butternut Squash
A distant relative of the pumpkin, so a little more traditional then the others, however the squash shape is one of a kind. Very much like the Sorting Hat from Harry Potter, the shape gives ample room for the imagination. However, a little more tough than the other options, the squash requires some strong arms, un-bendable cutlery and sheer determination.
Colourful, tiny creations. The easiest of them all to create, the veg that takes the least time yet still has a wow factor. Try making ten of these little monsters, or even an army of creepy traffic-light coloured faces to scare your guests this Halloween.
Another craze that seems to be making inroads into the pumpkins popularity. If you need to be convinced that Watermelons are the fruit for you this season click the link, http://bit.ly/HalloweenWatermelons and I needn’t say anything more!
- Sweet Potato
Another easy one to carve. Bake the sweetie for ten minutes or so, and you have the perfect canvas for your creativity. You HAVE to see the severed hand by Vanilla & Spice for some inspiration.
To put the fashionable fruits and veg to their limits, we tried a few of the above to see how they would really turn out, especially by a novice carvers like ourselves!
